Andris Brunovskis Technique: Baratoplata Variation
This post is part of our Patreon “long article” request! Thank you very much to Alteroc (@crwate01) for this fantastic topic proposal.
Alteroc created an article structure that covers three sportsmen from a single discipline in order to learn more about combat sports:
A true classic
A professional
Someone “abnormal”
This article discusses Jiu Jitsu #2.
Andris Brunovskis is a world-class gi player with a distinct and submission-oriented style that captures the imagination. Brunovskis has several placings at prominent championships such as the IBJJF European Open Championships, and he is always a contender to win every event he joins.
Brunovskis has gained a cult-like following within the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community as one of the first Europeans to explode into the Brazilian jiu-jitsu scene. Brunovskis, a black belt under Andre Galvao, used his distinctive game against a variety of opponents, winning the IBJJF World Championships at both blue and purple belt.
Some of Brunovskis’ most prominent techniques are unusual in the present metagame, such as his use of worm guard, stack passing, and, of course, the omoplata.
Keenan Cornelius, the inventor of the worm guard system, chose Brunovskis to be the assistant head coach at Cornelius’ academy. It’s no wonder, then, that Brunovskis understands how to use worm guard against opponents like a pro.
Whereas Cornelius nearly always utilizes his opponent’s lapel to perform worm guard, Brunovskis employs both his opponent’s belt and his lapel. While the lapel worm guard is more stable and helps you to tear down your opponent’s stance, the belt worm guard is more easier to attain and provides for more range of movement.
