Bertrand Dubreuil – La canne de combat

The “Canne de Combat” or “Canne d’Arme” is a French historical and cultural object.
It emerged in the early nineteenth century as a self-defense discipline, notably among upper-class “bourgeois” gentlemen in dangerous places like Paris.
Although its categorization as a sport does not permit this designation, some refer to it as French martial art.
The discipline’s history is intertwined with the evolution of Savate boxing tactics, which began with kicks and recently, under the influence of the British, added punches.
Gentlemen trained in Savate tactics learned to fight with a cane from a distance as well as close contact kickboxing.
The cane was in the hands of city dwellers, while the staff was in the hands of country dwellers.
In reality, in many nations and civilizations, the cane and the staff were inextricably linked.
