Lin Jin – Southern Shaolin Taizu Chang Quan Kung Fu
Southern Shaolin Taizu Chang Quan – Shaolin Boxing’s Grand Ancestor (Excerpt from an article by Salvatore Canzonieri that appeared in Shaolin Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine in May-June 2010) There is considerable debate on the origins of Shaolin Taizu Chang Quan -.
People in China’s Henan () region think that Taizu Chang Quan was constructed during the early Song () Dynasty, with the support of first emperor Zhao Kuangyin -.
Others say it was created during the Ming () dynasty and was named ‘Taizu’- in honor of either the Song Emperor or the first Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang-, who was also known as Ming Taizu- and ‘Hong Wu’-.
The Taizu Chang Quan set shares many similarities with Tongbi / Tongbei Quan – / and Taiji Quan -, including entire sequences of matching motions and postures from routines.
Taizu Chang Quan is distinguished by forceful blows and movements, body shaking, structural alignment, postures flowing with coordinated footwork, being very solid and stable both standing and stepping, and being successful in avoiding, grappling, joint locking, and takedowns.
All of which may still be found in Chen style () Taijiquan today.
Chen Youben () is said to have improved Chen Wangting’s () initial rendition of their family art by combining it with material from the Taizu Chang Quan style.
Video:
Mr. Lin Jin does the video demos, which include a mix of Chinese and English narration… pretty weak English translations, but decent enough to follow.
Enjoy!
