Mestre BarraoMarcos da Silva, Mestre Barro, was born in the coastal city of Recife on Brazil’s north-eastern coast.
Recife is well-known for Brazilian music and dancing, as well as its lengthy Capoeira legacy.
Marcos began training Capoeira with Mestre Pirajá in 1974.
He demonstrated a passion for the drums and other instruments, as well as the talents that would guide his life, while mastering the fundamentals of the art.
Marcos moved on to complete his training with Mestre Teté in 1977 after three years of training with Mestre Pirajá, who finally departed on sabbatical.
Mestre Teté taught him how to be a Street Capoeirista.
He learnt how to be crafty and clever when playing, how to read opponents, and how to assess circumstances that one constantly finds himself in, both within and outside of the Roda of Capoeira.
Marcos began competing in Capoeira contests in North East Brazil in 1979, and he began teaching in 1980.
A young Barro was keen to put his abilities to the test against the greatest opponents he could find in 1982, so he joined the famous National Championship in Rio de Janeiro.
Because to his talent and luck, he was crowned Brazilian Champion.
Upon his return, he was presented with several possibilities to teach at schools, community centers, and colleges around Brazil, and he finally founded Grupo Axé Capoeira.
Mestre Pirajá promoted him to First Degree Master in 1987.
He presently has the title of Second Degree Master.
Mestre Barro was asked to showcase his painting at International Children’s Festivals around North America in 1990, and he ultimately ended up in Canada at the Vancouver International Children’s Festival.
Barro opted to relocate to Canada in 1992 and begin teaching in various locales after spending 1991 teaching in Italy.
He founded the Annual International Capoeira Encounter, which has drawn recognized and respected Mestres from throughout the world to share their knowledge.
He founded Canada’s first Capoeira Academy in 1996.
Mestre Barro is now regularly invited to lead and teach Capoeira at worldwide seminars.
Mestre Barro was honored as one of the finest capoeiristas of the century by the mestres that gathered at the Melhores Do Seculo event in Curitiba Parana in 2000, owing to his expertise and commitment to Capoeira.
Mestre Barro and his Grupo Axé Capoeira have made seven CD volumes of Capoeira music, one of which, together with Mestre Burguês, is still quite famous across Brazil.
Axé Capoeira 2000, a video of the 2000 International Encounter, was also published, as were Axé Capoeira Performance Videos – Brazil 2001, Brazil 2003, and Brazil 2005.
Mestre Barro presently operates schools in Canada, Brazil, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Russia, China, Trinidad and Tobago, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Serbia, Azerbaijan, France, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Angola, Turkey, Japan, Barbados, Belarus, the Dominican Republic, and Poland.
