Kawaishi was a master of Japanese Judo and Jujutsu, rising to the level of 7th Dan and posthumously awarded 10th Dan by the Fédération Française.
He was instrumental in the development of Judo in France and much of Europe and devised the system of awarding belt colors for different levels of mastery.
