Physical Culture and Self Defense – Robert Fitzsimmons
Robert Fitzsimmons, born June 4, 1862, began boxing as an amateur in New Zealand and Australia, beating four men on his debut.
In the late nineteenth century, he met and defeated various well-known champions of the day, including Dempsey, Maher, Hall, Creedon, Corbett, Ruhlin, Sharkey, “and others of comparable distinction… ” He retained and defended the Heavy-Weight championship until June 9, 1899.
Fitzsimmons retired and taught Boxing, Self-Defense, and Physical Fitness, which was then known as “Physical Culture.” In 1901, he wrote “Physical Culture and Self Defense,” a Fitness and Boxing guidebook that combined content from prior works he had authored.
