The tape has a well-thought-out framework that is simple to follow. From explaining how to apply the armbar to numerous entry, counters, and combinations, the video concludes with advice on how to train the techniques presented!
Roy is a superb instructor with a clear and meticulous teaching style, executing all moves effortlessly and expertly while addressing all the key elements. All but one technique is performed without the use of a gi.
Mechanics Roy specifies seven activities that must be completed in order to apply the right mechanics for the straight armlock. Each action and its purpose are clearly described and shown, and each point is also highlighted in language over the top of the screen. The difference between using a lock with and without proper mechanics is also shown. This is excellent education in the fundamentals of how to use the lock.
Attributes According to Roy Harris, “attributes drive your approaches.” This part identifies and describes the characteristics he believes are required for the application of armlocks. Sensitivity, timing, isometric strength, and flexibility are examples.
Control Correct techniques are not always enough to keep a difficult opponent under control. Roy explains two control positions based on hip position as well as the head control theory while employing the armbar.
Entries A variety of entry to straight armlock variants are shown in depth from various postures. Each method is demonstrated three or four times, often from two different viewpoints.
A) Guard: Six straight armlock strikes are shown from the guard depending on your opponent’s stance. Locks of the Juji Gatame and Ude Gatame types are included. I hadn’t seen any of these varieties before.
B) Mount: 5 armlocks are shown here as countermeasures to your opponent’s mobility or in conjunction with other assaults. Excellent training in the complexities of these critical assaults. A gi is used to show one technique.
C) Side Position: From the Side Position, the specifics of three excellent armbars are taught.
D) Scarfhold: Roy demonstrates two common armlocks from Kesa Gatame.
E) Knee On Stomach: This section teaches you how to achieve the armbar on the far arm as they try to escape the Knee On Stomach.
Escapes This section of the video goes over 6 possible armbar escapes in detail. Various arm guarding techniques are taught, as well as stacking, turnouts, sit ups, and rollovers. As procedures are executed, key points display on the screen. There are some excellent details on these escapes that I haven’t seen on any other footage I’ve watched.
Counters Three escapes into your own submissions are then demonstrated, including a great rollover into a reverse Heelhook.
Combinations Roy then goes through 12 different combinations from various positions, using armlocks with other submissions and positioning maneuvers. This section is a great resource for introducing straight armlocks into your game.
Drills Included in this section are eight drills for developing various traits for the execution of armlocks. These drills may be simply modified to various methods and vary from repetition of a single technique to submission-counter sparring. Excellent work.
