Shotokan Karate – The Nakayama Legacy Vol.1-5
Master Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) founded Shotokan karate, but Master Masatoshi Nakayama was a key figure in organizing Shotokan karate into a system (1913-1987).
Master Nakayama was a senior pupil of Master Funakoshi, and the Japan Karate Association was founded in 1949. (JKA).
Master Nakayama was instrumental in developing the JKA instructor training program (kenshusei), which I feel was one of the reasons karate grew so rapidly over the world.
Senior sensei who graduated from the JKA teacher training program are now shotokan karate legends.
Exceptional Sensei such as Hirokazu Kanazawa, Keinosuke Enoeda, Yoshiharu Osaka, Tetsohiko Asai, Hiroshi Shirai, Masahiko Tanaka, Mikio Yahara, Masao Kawazoe, Takauki Mikami, Yutaka Yaguchi, Shiro Asano, Hideo Ochi, Shigeru Takashina, Fujikiyo
The JKA teachers’ standards were so high that their success was guaranteed.
Many of these elite martial artists were then scattered over the globe, organizing and establishing organizations linked with the JKA.
At the time (1960s and early 1970s), the Bruce Lee craze was sweeping the world, and when combined with the sheer excellence of the JKA instructors, shotokan karate exploded at an incredible rate.
The JKA has established a heritage that the whole shotokan world admires and admires.
The Japan Karate Association is still extremely strong today, with teachers all over the globe, hundreds of shotokan dojo, millions of members, and a global karate standard that remains quite high.
After master Nakayama died in 1987, the JKA divided and has continued to splinter into increasingly smaller groups, although the original JKA remains very powerful, with the honbu dojo located in Koraku, Bunkyo-ku, in the heart of downtown Tokyo.
Millions of shotokan karate-ka practice across the world, and they can thank Master Funakoshi, Master Nakayama, and the amazing Japan Karate Association, either directly or indirectly.
